What's after White? Moody.

For the last maybe 5-8 years everyone has been living, breathing all white kitchens. I have clients who would insist on white backsplash, white countertop and white cabinets.... all things WHITE. At the time, I think we were all so repelled by wood paneling and wanted BRIGHT and fresh. I remember seeing these all-white kitchens and saying, it feels cold- it feels sterile.

Right before the pandemic, (because that's like an official time reference now), it felt pretty common to use accents of rustic wood while white still being the dominant color. Somewhere during the pandemic, everyone got super moody on really permanent house features and I'm here for it! Whether it's kitchen cabinets, windows or exterior siding-- going dark has become a major trend. I think it's so amazing how after such a long time period of staying bright and white, everyone's ready to go back to dark & warm.

Dark & Moody Kitchen Trends

I will say, I think oil rubbed bronze as a finish is going to be taking a backseat for a while because matte black is timeless and here to stay.

Windows

Black windows are everywhere, and they look amazing! One of the caveats is that to get black on the exterior and white on the interior is like a major expense. To get black exterior and black interior isn't nearly the same cost but definitely impacts your overall look on the inside. Most of us have white trim on the windows and to change to black window trim is a major commitment.

Exterior Siding

Whether it's dark paint or moody vertical siding- there is a new signature look developing.

Metal Roof

Black stand & seam metal roofing has overtaken the traditional silver metal roof (and thank God!) The combination of black shingles and black metal roof is one of my favorite exterior looks out there right now.

I'm keeping my list specific to the more permanent house features because people are really investing their money into this dark & moody vibe for long term features (not just paint & flooring). I think this aesthetic will be a long-term goal for a lot of homeowners and something safe to invest in for your own home if it's the look you love.
