5 Must-Have Functional Kitchen Cabinets

If you're at a place in your life where you're designing your own kitchen from scratch, keep reading! You really should consider these top 10 cabinets for the most functional kitchen lay-out.

1. Trash Can Pull-out: This one seems obvious but it'd be a sin if you didn't include it in your new lay-out. Trash can pull-out cabinets can come in a few different sizes but the important part is if you need 1 trash can or 2 trash cans. Also its important if you'd like there to be a drawer above the trash can or if you want a full height door.

2. Drawers near the stove: Most cabinet lines offer a stack of 3 drawers or a stack of 4 drawers. Whatever you chose, try to put your stack of drawers near the stove. Its the perfect place to put oven mitts, hot pads, utensils, measuring cups. Small storage keeps everything organized.

3. Tilt-out sink base: In every sink base, there's a false drawer front at the top. It can't be used as a drawer because the sink is in the way BUT you can most likely upgrade to having this drawer panel "tilt-out". This storage spot would be used for things like sponges, pan scrapers, small cleaning supplies

4. Roll-out Trays: Aim for at least one big cabinet with roll-out trays. This is your perfect spot for small kitchen appliances or heavy casserole dishes! The roll-out trays make it super easy to see everything so you don't need to bend over as far.

5. Tray Divider: There's two options for this, you can request a skinny/ tall base cabinet (9" or 12" wide) OR you can request a 24" deep wall cabinet above your fridge. I personally opted for using our 24" deep fridge cabinet for cookie trays and muffin pans etc. The depth also helps make the fridge look more built-in.

A few other fun cabinets to consider: Spice pull-out cabinet, glass cabinets, bookcase, microwave base cabinet, cutlery divider and so on. These cabinets are fun but not completely critical to making your kitchen function.
